Who wrote "Ice Cream"
Robert A. King wrote the music, and Howard Johnson and Billy Moll the lyrics, a comic song built on the playground chant. It is a song with words. It was published in 1927 and recorded that year by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. In the 1950s the British trad-jazz revival took it up, and the version by Chris Barber's Jazz Band, featuring the clarinettist Monty Sunshine, made it a standard of that style.
Recordings that made it a standard
- Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians (1927) — an early recording from the year of publication.
- Chris Barber's Jazz Band, with Monty Sunshine (1950s) — the trad-jazz version, with Sunshine's clarinet and the band's chorus.
