Who wrote "Mas Que Nada"
Jorge Ben, who later signed his name Jorge Ben Jor, wrote both the music and the Portuguese words. He recorded it on his first album, Samba Esquema Novo, in 1963. The title is a Brazilian expression, roughly "come on" or "no way", and the chorus is built on a wordless refrain that audiences sing along with.
Recordings that made it a standard
- Jorge Ben, Samba Esquema Novo (1963) — the original, voice and guitar over a samba rhythm section.
- Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66 (1966) — the version that made the song an international hit and the best-known recording of it outside Brazil.
- Sérgio Mendes with the Black Eyed Peas, Timeless (2006) — a remake that brought it back to the charts forty years on.
