Spencer Williams wrote the music and the words; the lyric is a song of homesickness for Tishomingo, a town in Mississippi. It was published in 1917, and Williams, who also wrote "Basin Street Blues" and "I Ain't Got Nobody", saw it taken up by the dance bands of the 1920s.

It has stayed in the repertoire of traditional and Dixieland bands ever since.
