"Yours" is the English version of "Quiéreme mucho", a song by the Cuban composer Gonzalo Roig written in 1911, with English lyrics by Jack Sherr. It was a wartime hit for Vera Lynn and Jimmy Dorsey. This page has the Yours chords and a bossa nova backing track you can transpose for a singer.

Who wrote "Yours"

Gonzalo Roig wrote the music of "Quiéreme mucho" in Havana in 1911. Jack Sherr wrote the English lyrics in the late 1930s, a promise of devotion, and the song has words in both languages. In 1941 Vera Lynn's recording was a hit in Britain and Jimmy Dorsey's, with Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell, in the United States.

Recordings that made it a standard

  • Vera Lynn (1941) — the wartime hit in Britain.
  • Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra (1941) — the American hit, with Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell.

"Quiéreme mucho" is one of the best-known Cuban songs and has been recorded by many Latin singers.

The changes

This chart is in C at 140 bpm, chords only. It is written as a sixteen-bar A and an eighteen-bar B, with a two-bar ending on G9.

The A section is C | B+ | C | C6 | C | CMaj7 | Dm7 | G9: the tonic, an augmented chord a half step below that leans back into it, a rising inner voice on the tonic, and a ii-V. It continues with the ii-V repeated four times, Dm7 | G9, then CMaj7 Am7 | Dm7 G9, a turnaround. The long ii-V gives the melody room.

The B section starts the same way and turns to D minor: A A7 | A+ A7 | Dm7 | %, the VI as a major chord, then a dominant with a rising fifth that resolves to the ii. It continues F | F#m7b5 | CMaj7 A9 | Dm7 A7 | Dm7 | Bb9 | C Am7 | Dm7 G9, the IV and a half-diminished chord a half step above, a secondary dominant, the flat-seven dominant, and two turnarounds.

The augmented chords and the move to D minor are the colours of the song. In a bossa feel, the guitar can keep a gentle pattern; a singer should phrase the melody smoothly, in the romantic style of the Cuban canción.
